The 2008 fishing season will open at 12:01 am Saturday morning, whether there is ice left on the lakes or not. The season opens Saturday for walleyes, northern pike and trout in lakes, with the opener for bass (May 24) and muskies (June 7) later this spring.

The time for mushrooms and other fungi in our part of the country is late summer and fall. Some, like the scarlet cup, however, show up in the spring.

North Dakota’s deer gun season doesn’t begin until Nov. 7, and applications aren’t even due until June 4. So why am I thinking about deer already?

Don’t look for a dead gobbler at the end of this turkey tale. Don Christensen will warn you about that right up front.

Old Sam Peabody has been stopping by lately. I normally see him every year about this time, including autumn. He’s a pleasant looking fellow with a fine disposition and the sweetest voice you’ve ever heard. Singing, you see, is his forte, and anyone hearing his medley won’t likely forget it. Yes, Old Sam Peabody is another of my favorite birds: the white-throated sparrow.

Desiree Bouvette says she doesn’t “do worms” when she goes fishing; she leaves the job of baiting the hook to her husband, John.

This time of the year, with the walleye spawn in full swing and water temperatures in the mid-40s, catching fish can be difficult. I’ve gradually realized over the years that slowing down, keeping noise to a minimum and using a smaller bait (minnows included), will lead to some, if not more fish when conditions are difficult.

The weather is cold and hot this time of year, and the fishing can be the same way. Streaky, inconsistent and uneven until the first warm stretch of weather brings April into May. One thing that should not be inconsistent is the attitude of anglers toward boat safety at this time of year. As most rivers have opened up and the icy grip of winter is weakening on many lakes, angler excitement to put a boat on the water is at its seasonal peak. But all too often, fishermen overlook their safety in spring, a particularly treacherous time.

Color! Oh how we yearn for it after months of winters’ white and grays. Soon green grass will soothe our senses, the soft pastels of flowering trees will warm our hearts and brightly colored bulbs will excite us.

When I got home Thursday from a weeklong trip to the nation’s capital, three blackbirds were sitting companionably together in a cottonwood tree near my house.
