DNR Enforcement report: Beaver permits, Remove boat plug regulation etc.

CO Dan Malinowski (Fosston) issued a number of Special Beaver Permits to landowners experiencing water problems caused by beaver dams. Angling, boating, ATV, and leech trapping activity was monitored. A river alteration complaint and a call of an injured deer were investigated. An illegally taken bear case was sent to the county attorney for prosecution.

MDHA to handle TIP administrative duties

Minnesota’s Turn in Poachers organization has moved its headquarters from Eagan to Grand Rapids, Minn., after reaching an agreement with the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, which now will conduct administrative duties for TIP. MDHA is based in Grand Rapids.

DNR conservation officers' report: Poached buck, Boat and water enforcement etc.

DNR conservation officer Ben Huener (Roseau) investigated an 11-point buck that was poached north of Thief Lake in Roseau County. TIPs are kept completely confidential and may qualify for a cash reward. Anybody with information is encouraged to call the TIP line at (800) 652-9093.

Minnesota ruffed grouse, sharptail counts decline Crews tallied 1.8 drums per stop in the northwest, which is basically unchanged from last year, while counts were down 31 percent in the northeast survey area that encompasses the core and the bulk of grouse range in Minnesota.

CO Keith Backer (Blackduck) reported one angler that did not have a fishing license claimed she was only “practice fishing.” The practice fishing was being done with a rod, reel, bobber, jig and hook. A real ticket was issued to the practice fisherwoman.

CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) conducted an interview with a local radio station concerning what should be done when finding baby animals in the wild. Although it may seem hard, it is best to leave the animal where it is found.

Conducted Feb. 25, the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge survey tallied an estimated 52 moose, a number that’s low but still better than the 30- to 50-moose estimate from 2005 to 2007. From 1994 to 2004, the survey consistently produced a population estimate of 70 to 80 moose.

DNR conservation officer reports: Fishing enforcement, Trespass complaints, Wolf depredation etc.

CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls)answered nuisance bear and beaver complaints and patrolled area State Parks. Area anglers were checked as well as boat and water safety checks. Area angler success was marginal and a complaint of wanton waste of deer meat was investigated. Enforcement action for the week included angle without valid license and burn without valid permit.
