CO Larry Milbridge (Warroad) worked with fellow officers on angling, boating safety and invasive species enforcement. Unstable weather limited access to Lake of the Woods, but fishing was good when you could get out.
CO Stuart Bensen (Erskine) reports some anglers are catching sunfish and crappies. Injured deer and nuisance bear calls were addressed. Complaints of a wetland alteration, and a calf killed by a timber wolf were investigated.
CO Ben Huener (Roseau) conducted angling and invasive species checks on Lake of the Woods. Many anglers are still being educated about the potentially dangerous bait being used, and lots of illegal bait is being seized. Although tip-up fishing for pike has been spotty, many large pike are being caught.
CO Larry Milbridge (Warroad)received a number of complaints regarding trucks being driven down snowmobile Grant-in-Aid trails on Lake of the Woods. L.O.W. users are reminded these trails are for snowmobiles only.
CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette)checked two anglers in a large house on Lake of the Woods. The anglers stated they only had a few fish. A subsequent search revealed 33 walleye and sauger stashed under the house. The fish were seized and citations issued for over limits.
CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette)investigated a complaint of two road kill 10-point bucks that were unlawfully possessed. People are reminded that a permit must be obtained prior to picking up any road kill deer.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls)is investigating the senseless shooting and leaving of a healthy adult cow moose in the High Landing area of Pennington County. CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls)worked with CO Pilot Don Murray for the firearms deer season opener. One individual fled from CO Woinarowicz in his vehicle and then ran into the woods after removing his blaze orange jacket. The plane was soon overhead and when the violator heard it circling, he realized escape was futile and came out of the woods. He was arrested and faces charges for DWI and other violations.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) reported taking enforcement action on an individual that took a bear in a quota zone while only possessing a no quota zone license, with other possible charges pending further investigation.
DNR conservation officer Ben Huener (Roseau) investigated an 11-point buck that was poached north of Thief Lake in Roseau County. TIPs are kept completely confidential and may qualify for a cash reward. Anybody with information is encouraged to call the TIP line at (800) 652-9093.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls)answered nuisance bear and beaver complaints and patrolled area State Parks. Area anglers were checked as well as boat and water safety checks. Area angler success was marginal and a complaint of wanton waste of deer meat was investigated. Enforcement action for the week included angle without valid license and burn without valid permit.
