Leier: Still enough summer left to get out fishing

I’m sorry to bring it up, but more summer – the season, not the calendar dates – is now behind us than in front of us. We’re just weeks away from the first day of school and not too many days from fall practice for high school and college activities.

Hunting season set for sandhill cranes

Minnesota will hold its first-ever sandhill crane season this fall, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Monday. The season will open Sept. 4, the same day as the early goose season. The regular waterfowl season opens at 9 a.m. on Oct. 2. A Youth Waterfowl Hunting Day will be Sept. 18. Final decisions about waterfowl limits and season length will be made after the Mississippi Flyway Council meetings later this month.

No pronghorn season this year

North Dakota Game and Fish Department biologists recently completed the 2010 pronghorn population survey, and census data revealed the statewide population is 37 percent lower than last year and down more than 50 percent from 2008 as a consequence of recent severe winter weather. Therefore, the Game and Fish Department will not recommend a pronghorn hunting season in 2010.

Go hunting while you can

It troubles me a great deal to come to grips with reality, but 3-1/2 years after getting my right hip replaced, and four months after a right knee replacement, I cannot envision ever again scrambling around in the bighorn sheep country of northwestern Wyoming — nor in the Colorado Rockies where I have applied for a permit since the mid-1990s.
