DESTINATION BELTRAMI We’ve come here by snowmobile to ride through Beltrami Island State Forest, and we’re winding through the trees at 35 mph on a trail groomed so smooth it’s like a highway of snow. On this day, at least, the trip isn’t so much about reaching a destination as it is about enjoying the ride, and there’s a lot to enjoy here in one of northern Minnesota’s great forests.

The mud flats north of Pine Island are kicking out walleyes and saugers in 30 to 34 feet. The afternoon hours have been best with shiner minnows and any jig that glows. Look in the 20-foot range during the early morning and evening hours. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes, saugers and some jumbo perch are being found around the islands in 20 to 30 feet of water throughout the day.
