Cubs and mom enjoy a fishy meal This photo was taken south of Superior, Wis., by Dennis Archer recently. A sow bear with five cubs had found some fish entrails that Archer had placed in his yard. It's not common for a sow to have five cubs, said Martha Minchak, Department of Natural Resources assistant area wildlife manager in Duluth. "It's obviously a very healthy sow, probably in her prime reproductive years," Minchak said.

Ely black bear, cub reunite

An Ely black bear and her cub have reunited after 1½ months apart. Researchers Sue Mansfield and Lynn Rogers of the North American Bear Center confirmed today that Lily and her 5-month-old cub, Hope, reunited Sunday after the mother wandered into the cub’s area. The two were discovered together today by Mansfield, who has been the afternoon videotaping mother and cub and recording their behavior. Mansfield and Rogers estimate that the bears have been together since 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Dennis Archer, who lives south of Superior, photographed this sow black bear with five cubs behind his home on July 1. “I couldn’t believe it,” Archer said. “I saw those bears. Two came out initially, and three came out later. I thought, “I’d better get my camera, or no one will believe me.’”

We’ve had a cabin on 6th Crow Wing for almost 35 years, and we had a ‘first’ a couple weeks ago. My grandson and his wife noticed a great blue heron further up in the yard than usual and watched as he snatched a chipmunk, walked to the dock, dunked the chipmunk in the water and ‘down the hatch.’
