Open Season: With spring on its way, time to switch gears

As winter gradually relinquishes its clammy hold, hunters and fishermen are experiencing ‘tween time: that seemingly expansive nether-region until spring. My outdoors OCD kicked into high gear last week with the stretch of above-freezing temperatures. What to do: Go ice fishing for the umpteenth time, or prepare for spring? I relented to my urge for the former – especially since now is the best time to target voracious panfish – but I could just have easily gotten ready for the next stretch of outdoor entertainment.

Field Reports: Bill would raise price of Minnesota fishing licenses

Minnesota Sen. Satveer Chaudhary, DFL-Fridley, will introduce a bill calling for a $4 increase in Minnesota fishing licenses in 2011 and another $4 increase in 2015. Chaudhary wants to tie the increases to three purposes: additional fish stocking, allowing youths 16 and 17 to fish for free (they’re now required to have licenses), and increasing the amount license vendors receive from $1 to $2 per license sold. He also might earmark part of the increase to combating invasive species, he said.

Do it: Crappie time

While Minnesota fishing seasons have ended for walleyes, northern pike and bass, it’s a good time to fish for crappies. Grab some crappie minnows and head for the closest crappie lake. Fishing out in the open in some 40-degree sunshine isn’t tough duty.

Lakes are no place for anglers’ garbage

Lakes are no place for anglers’ garbage As anglers remove their permanent ice shelters from Minnesota lakes, diligence in leaving no trace behind is sometimes forgotten. Avid campers and hikers often recite their golden rule, “If you pack it in, pack it out.”
