'Wild' turkey hanging out in Hawthorne
Word has it that a wild turkey has been hanging out at the BP gas station and the Covered Wagon restaurant in Hawthorne. “People are, like, how cool is that to have a turkey around your business?” said Elizabeth Dolsen, a clerk at the BP station on U.S. Highway 53. But Greg Kessler knows better. Kessler, Department of Natural Resources area wildlife manager at Brule, says the hen is most likely not a wild turkey but a tame one.By Sam Cook , March 09, 2010

Timber management is a life-long project
ast spring I set a goal for myself. Over a period of several years, I planned to clear all the timber of undesirable trees, thin out the overcrowded ones, and open up areas to improve browse for wildlife as well as being able to one day harvest some timber.By Walter Scott , February 27, 2010
DOUG LEIER COLUMN: March: Hopefully it's mellow and short, eh?
In like a kitten and out like a lamb. I know that’s not exactly how the traditional saying goes, as I’m substituting a kitten in place of lion to describe the month of March. At least, that's how I'd like to see March unfold, with a beginning, middle and end less like January and more April-ish.February 26, 2010

give the critters a break
As if two feet of snow and -30someodd degrees isn't bad enough, some wildlife is intentionally chased and harassed by snowmachines. Don't get me wrong, this is a case of one small apple NOT ruining the whole bunch. It's not all snow-riders. But we don't need any of it going on. The full rundown is p

Most people take a step back when they read 'climate change' but fear not...don't be afraid. This post is not going to make you shake your head. Here's a group from North Dakota which lists the ND Farmers Union, Ducks Unlimited and North Dakota Wildlife Federation in it's run down of partners. Pers

It'll be easy to mentally book mark 2009-10 blizzard and deep freeze. Christmas brought two feet of snow and New Years rung in -30 below temperatures across the region. My neighbor Burdell will attest as we shoveled last Sunday when I exclaimed, "first comes the snow...then we'll get the cold&

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department emphasizes a simple message to well-intentioned humans who want to pick up and rescue what appear to be orphaned baby animals – don’t touch them. Whether it is a young fawn, duckling, cottontail rabbit or a songbird, it is better to just leave
