Rivers good for walleyes early in spring

Although there is still plenty of ice-fishing going on, some anglers throughout the Midwest are already enjoying open water fishing. They’re on rivers, and they’re fishing for walleyes. Walleyes will eat a bait year ‘round. While they will get more aggressive later in the year as the water temperatures rise, right now can be a good time to get in on the action. The walleyes are willing to bite, they can be found in good numbers in certain areas, and it’s always fun to get the boat in the water for the first open water fishing trip of the year. Here’s how you can get in on the action.

Sometimes just the basics work best on the ice

The “Dog Days” of winter for some begin in December and aren’t officially over until the last drift of snow disappears from the shelterbelt. I know, Dog Days is generally a summer term referring to a lingering hot and humid period in August, but it also seems appropriate for a long stretch of midwinter weather that just doesn’t want to break for the positive.

Still time for good ice action

In most parts of the Midwest, we’re still kind of in the middle of the ice fishing season: Maybe it would be best described as “late-middle of the season.” The end of the ice fishing season can provide some outstanding action. In fact, many anglers greatly anticipate the last few weeks of ice fishing. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and the fish are willing to bite. Now is when you should be planning an end of the year ice-fishing trip.

A slow day on the lake

An ice fisherman’s persona is one of toughness, muscle and grit. If you’re going to plant your backside out on a lake’s frozen surface in January, you’d better be something of a “He-man.” It’s cold out there.
