Purchasin fishing licenses in 'less memorable fashion'
With the possible exception of a first driver’s license, few people spin a nostalgic tale about buying a license “back in the day.”By Doug Leier , March 11, 2010
Leier: April 1 deadline for licenses approaching
Since April 1 marks the new licensing season for angling, general game, habitat, small game and furbearer licenses, it’s a good time to promote the benefits of buying online at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s Web site: gf.nd.gov.March 10, 2010
DOUG LEIER COLUMN: Sharing information remains root of tech revolution
Is technology steering the future of the outdoors? The obvious answer is yes, but the direction is not always so clear. Using a GPS device to mark a sandbar that might be a safety hazard to boaters is a good direction. Using a computer linked to the Internet linked to a webcam watching over a deer feeder in a distant state, allowing someone to “hunt” a farmed deer from their office, is not a good direction.By Doug Leier , March 05, 2010

Leier: Fall hunting seasons for ‘big three’ are set
Without a taste of spring or summer yet, big game hunters in North Dakota are already looking to fall as the big three – moose, elk and bighorn sheep – seasons have been set and applications are available.March 03, 2010
DOUG LEIER COLUMN: March: Hopefully it's mellow and short, eh?
In like a kitten and out like a lamb. I know that’s not exactly how the traditional saying goes, as I’m substituting a kitten in place of lion to describe the month of March. At least, that's how I'd like to see March unfold, with a beginning, middle and end less like January and more April-ish.February 26, 2010
Leier: Hoping March comes in like kitten, not lion

Leier: Observation of wildlife is all around us
Over the past decade, I have read numerous accounts on the rising popularity of watchable wildlife, which is a more inclusive and contemporary terminology than simply birdwatching.February 18, 2010

Leier: Less is more with ice fishing
The “Dog Days” of winter for some begin in December and aren’t officially over until the last drift of snow disappears from the shelterbelt.February 11, 2010
Keeping ice fishing trips low impact
The “dog days” of winter for some begin in December and aren’t officially over until the last drift of snow disappears from the shelterbelt. I know, dog days is generally a summer term referring to a lingering hot and humid period in August, but it also seems appropriate for a long stretch of midwinter weather that just doesn’t’ want to break for the positive.By Doug Leier , February 11, 2010
State stands to lose 261,000 CRP acres in 2010
While I was born in the 70s and remember a few events and places, like the LaMoure Lobos winning the 1976 North Dakota State Class B basketball title after we moved there from Williston, the 80s are when most of my vivid memories begin.By Doug Leier , February 04, 2010
Leier: CRP important for farmers, hunters
If I had to identify with a decade, it was the 1980s. While I was born in the 1970s and remember a few events and places, like the LaMoure Loboes winning the 1976 North Dakota state Class B basketball title after we moved there from Williston, the 1980s are when most of my vivid memories begin.February 04, 2010
