Trolling bright crankbaits on downriggers or lead core line has produced walleyes on the deep mud of Big Traverse Bay. Schools of walleyes and saugers are being found out from Pine Island, Long Point and Garden Island in 30 to 35 feet of water.

OUTDOOR REPORT: Area fishing and skiing report
Lake of the Woods Limits of walleyes and saugers are still being caught, with more tullibees and jumbo perch in the mix along the south shore, as well. Morning and evening action has been best in 15 feet of water, while midday fishing is most consistent on the mud flats in 28 to 34 feet. Some resorts have moved out to the reefs such as Knight, Bridges and Starren Shoals and found fish. On the Rainy River, walleyes are hitting in 17 to 19 feet toward the mouth of the river. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch are filling buckets in 27 to 29 feet, and crappies continue to hit adjacent to deep bays in Ontario waters.

Field reports: Boy Scout Landing will close in July as renovation begins
The popular boat launch at Boy Scout Landing on the St. Louis River in New Duluth will be closed for about two months this summer for improvements, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The $376,000 project will add one more dock, move the fishing pier farther upriver from the current site and improve stormwater runoff, said Joe Russell, DNR Parks and Trails supervisor for the North Shore.
