Lake of the Woods In the Pine Island area, the best reports are coming from anglers venturing out 15 miles or farther, and anglers are catching a mix of walleyes and saugers, Lake of the Woods tourism reported. Anglers fishing structure near Knight, Bridges and Garden island also are doing well. Meanwhile, "decent" fishing is being reported from the Morris Point area to Zippel Bay in 20 feet to 28 feet of water during the day and 15 to 18 feet mornings and evenings. Reefs and mud bottom areas adjacent to structure have been producing fish near Long Point and Rocky Point.

Mn DNR District 1 - June 22, 2015 CO Ben Huener (Roseau) monitored area ATV activity and responded to local animal calls for nuisance bears and raccoons. Anglers were checked on the Roseau River and Lake of the Woods. An arrest was made for an intoxicated boater at the Northwest Angle. Enforcement action was also taken for angling without a license.

June 1, 2015: CO Ben Huener (Roseau) checked angling activity on the Roseau River and at the Northwest Angle. Several calls were taken regarding nuisance bears and people were advised to bring birdseed, garbage, and dog food inside until the bear left the area. A wolf depredation was investigated near Halma.

AnglingBuzz: Supersize! - Use bigger baits to catch bigger pike
Much has been said recently about the overall decrease in the size of northern pike throughout Minnesota in the past 20 years. To combat this trend, the Minnesota DNR is proposing innovative management strategies designed to reduce the numbers of "hammer handle" northerns in many waters, while simultaneously limiting the harvest of larger pike. The end goal is having more big pike available for anglers to catch.

Effort to lure endangered shorebird to nest in Twin Ports includes closing road.
SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Wisconsin's rarest bird will be flying back from Florida soon and efforts are underway to make them feel more at home in the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior if they choose to stop here. Piping plovers winging north, if they do stop, should find a quieter beach along Wisconsin Point this year with the road leading to Shafer Beach and Dutchman's Creek entry on Wisconsin Point closed from April 15 to June 15.
