Polaris pioneer: At 92, David Johnson still enjoys riding the trail nearly 60 years after building the first Polaris snowmobile.
ROSEAU, Minn. -- When the Antique Snowmobile Club of America picked Roseau as the site for its 2015 winter convention and "Back in the Day Snowmobile Getaway" last month, the group paid tribute to a snowmobile pioneer. David Johnson, 92, built the first Polaris snowmobile in January 1956 in a Roseau machine shop and is recognized as one of the founders -- along with brothers Allan and Edgar Hetteen -- of Polaris Industries.

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. -- When Brian and Michelle Nelson took over the Red River Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever in 2005, they faced the challenge of reviving a chapter in a region with no pheasants, no habitat for pheasants and no prospects for having a sustainable wild population of the popular game birds. Tall order, that. So, instead of focusing on pheasants and habitat, the East Grand Forks couple and their six kids rolled up their sleeves and went to work on fundraising, selling raffle tickets and recruiting volunteers to help them raise money for hunter education programs, youth trapshooting teams and other kids' outdoor learning initiatives.
