A new bill in the state Legislature would let all-terrain vehicles use the roads to go to driveways and sidewalks where they can plow snow.

Right now, some communities let four-wheelers venture onto the streets to head from one plowing job to another. But not all places allow it.

Assembly Democrat Andy Jorgensen of Fort Atkinson and Senate Democrat Jim Holperin of Conover say it makes sense to allow ATVs to plow driveways and such. Jorgensen says it’s a way for rural residents to help each other out.

But ATVs are not legal on state highways – and Dennis Hughes of the state Department of Transportation says they aren’t safe on the roads in any weather. Besides, Hughes says ATVs can be used without driver’s licenses.

Holperin says he’ll take the concerns of authorities into account. His Senate Transportation Committee plans to hold a hearing on the bill in January.
