Here is the weekly report from Department of Natural Resources conservation officers in northwest Minnesota for Jan. 28:
District 1 - Baudette area
CO Ben Huener (Roseau) attended a district meeting in Thief River Falls. Contact was made with a hunter/landowner regarding a potentially unsafe shooting lane and trespass issue. CO Huener worked anglers on Lake of the Woods from the south shore to the NW Angle with CO’s Birchem, Znajda, Gorecki and Sherack. Violations encountered included angling with extra lines, angling with unattended lines, possession of marijuana, angling without a license in possession, and possession of unmeasurable walleyes.
CO Jeff Birchem (Baudette) along with other officers conducted a two-day snowmobile patrol on Lake of the Woods. Fishing success was poor and officers issued numerous citations for angling violations. A district meeting and training was attended in Thief River Falls. CO Birchem assisted a homeowner on a nuisance mink that had killed numerous pheasants.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) continued field training with COC Williams, inspected an area aeration permit, attended a district meeting, and patrolled area snowmobile trails. Enforcement action for the week included leaving a shelter on a public access, snowmobile registration, no safety training, and allowing illegal operation of a snowmobile by a juvenile.
CO Angie Warren (Thief River Falls) worked area snowmobile trails and rivers for activity with area trails receiving grooming activity. Angling activity was monitored on the Red Lake and Thief rivers. CO Warren attended training and a district meeting in Thief River Falls. Preparations were made for upcoming snowmobile safety classes.
CO Keith Backer (Blackduck) attended a district training in Thief River Falls, worked area lakes for angling activity, and patrolled Upper Red Lake. Area snowmobile activity and ATV activity was monitored. Enforcement activity for the week included angling, ATV and snowmobile violations.
CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) monitored fishing activity throughout the week. Fishing continues to be slow on Lake of the Woods and fair on Upper Red Lake. CO Gorecki participated in a work detail over the weekend on Lake of the Woods with several officers working nearly the entire lake. Enforcement action included over limit of walleye, illegal length walleye, angle with extra lines, leave lines unattended, angle without a license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

District 2 - Bemidji area
CO Tom Hutchins (Crookston) and COC (Conservation Officer Candidate) Regas monitored snowmobile traffic on the Red River, Red Lake River and Ada areas. The officers monitored angler activity on area lakes and rivers. They conducted an aeration system inspection. Follow up continues on information received from the TIP line. They attended a local Firearms Safety instructors meeting and attended a district staff meeting. They spent time on a Lake of the Woods work detail where enforcement action was taken for angle with extra lines, angle without a license, angle without license in possession, possession of illegal length walleye and possession of un-measurable fish.
CO Dan Malinowski (Fosston) monitored angling, snowmobiling, trapping and had several equipment issues. He attended a Veterans Vintage snowmobile event, displayed furs and assisted children building bird houses with a local sportsmen’s club during Fosston Frosty Days. He also taught laws and ethics at a snowmobile safety class.
CO Tim Gray (Bagley) monitored ice fishing, snowmobile and trapping activity. Area trails remain in poor condition due to lack of snow. Reports were completed and calls answered.
CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) monitored angling and cross-country ski activity throughout the week. Snowmobile activity has increased with the recent snowfall, but trails are in fair to poor condition. A district meeting and training was attended in Park Rapids. CO Vollbrecht assisted county deputies with a complaint of gun shots heard on the Bemidji Game Refuge.
CO Chris Vinton (Detroit Lakes) reports fishing has slowed as ice conditions continue to improve. CO Vinton investigated a snowmobile trespass complaint where a rider was accessing the lake via private property. Area snowmobile trails are in poor condition due to lack of snow cover. A complaint of litter was investigated. Ice anglers are reminded to pick up after themselves. CO Vinton had a student ride along from NDSU for a day. Several shelters on area lakes were found in violation.
CO Phil Seefeldt (Moorhead) and COC Holt patrolled area lakes for angling activity. Fishing success has slowed but angling pressure remains high. CO Seefeldt and COC Holt remind fish house owners that they must display proper identification on their fish houses when left unattended. CO Seefeldt and COC Holt attended a District 2/4 meeting in Park Rapids. CO Seefeldt attended the Ada youth snowmobile safety class to give a talk on snowmobile laws. CO Seefeldt and CO Forsberg investigated a TIP case of a deer being shot after hours during the archery season. A deer and bow were seized as a result of this investigation.
CO Al Peterson (Osage) monitored ice fishing activity. Action was somewhat slow with a few pan fish, perch and small northerns being the majority of fish being caught. Compliance was good. Snowmobile activity is still very slow. The officer attended a use of force class and took calls on car killed deer, litter and open burning.
CO Gary Forsberg (Pelican Rapids) spent the week checking fishermen, working on aeration inspections and reviewing landowner turkey applications. CO Forsberg assisted CO Seefeldt with a TIP call involving a complaint from the deer season. A district meeting and training was attended in Park Rapids.
Wetland Resource Enforcement Officer Joe Stattelman spent the week preparing materials for upcoming training, meetings, and public events. Time was spent at the District 1 meeting where training was received. The officer met with the County Attorney reference ongoing cases.

Bemidji #2 - vacant.
Natural Resources Pilot John Heineman (Bemidji) started the moose capture out of the Grand Marais area. The goal is to capture 75 cows and 25 bulls and fit them with GPS collars. Heineman also flew a wolf telemetry flight and prepared for the upcoming elk survey in the northwest. Aircraft maintenance was also addressed.
