The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking watercraft inspector interns for the upcoming boating season. The inspectors will be stationed at public accesses on lakes and rivers infested with invasive species such as Eurasian watermilfoil and zebra mussels. The deadline for applications is Feb. 1.

In northwest Minnesota, positions are available in Baudette, Bemidji, Crookston and Warroad; the DNR also has openings in Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Ely, Grand Rapids, Tower and Walker, Minn.

“We’re looking for enthusiastic young adults interested in doing important environmental conservation work,” Heidi Wolf, DNR watercraft inspection program coordinator, said in a news release. Watercraft inspectors inform and educate the public about aquatic invasive species and the threat they pose to Minnesota waters.

The positions are full-time, temporary internships and will start in late April continuing through the middle of October. The DNR says flexible schedules will be given to students still in school.

Besides the positions in northern Minnesota communities, the DNR is looking for inspectors in Aitkin, Anoka, Benton, Blue Earth, Carver, Chisago, Crow Wing, Dakota, Douglas, Goodhue, Houston, Kanebec, Kandiyohi, Le Sueur, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Northern Pope Olmstead, Otter Tail, Pine, Ramsey, Rice, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Wabasha, Washington, Winona and Wright counties.

Applicants must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license, be enrolled in a natural resources or related program, and eligible to receive school credit for the position.
