Rohde artwork selected for duck stamp contest

The hooded merganser is featured as the 2010 ‘Best of Show’ in the North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Eighteen-year-old Alicia Rohde from Valley City titled her winning artwork “Chillin’ in the Swamp.” Rohde has participated in the Junior Duck Stamp Contest for four years, winning runner-up Best of Show in 2009 and third place in 2008. Her artwork was selected from 878 entries received from throughout North Dakota. Rohde is a senior at LaMoure High School.

Rohde is a senior at LaMoure High School.

In April, Rohde’s artwork will compete at the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest along with other state and U.S. territory entries. The winner of the national contest will have his or her entry made into a stamp that is sold for $5, with proceeds from these stamps supporting conservation education programs.

The North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Banquet and Awards Ceremony will be held for all first-, second- and third-place winners in Bismarck on May 1, in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Wildlife Club banquet and auction. Winning students will receive ribbons and prizes donated by National Wildlife Refuges, Ducks Unlimited and wildlife clubs from throughout North Dakota. The winning artwork will be exhibited throughout the state at national wildlife refuge events, zoos, shopping malls, Fargo Scheels and other locations throughout the year.

First-, second- and third-place area winners in the four age groups are:

First Place Group 4 (Grades 10-12): Alicia Rohde, Valley City (Best of Show); Tanner Morehouse, Valley City

Second Place Group 4 (Grades 10-12): Lindy Olstad, Valley City

Third Place Group 4 (Grades 10-12): Shylan Peterson – Valley City

Area honorable mention winners are:

Group 1 (K-Grade 3): Sadie Magnuson, Carrington

Group 2 (Grades 4-6): Austin Werbelow, James-town; Abigail Jarrett, Carrington; Timothy Kietzman, Edgeley

Group 3 (Grades 7-9): JoLynn Gregoryk, Lisa Rush, Angele Dyck, Destiny Winkler, Torrey Morehouse and Spencer Meyer, all Valley City; Benjamin Kietzman, Edgeley

Group 4 (Grades 10-12): Amanda Tangen, Kathryn; Abby Colville, Matt McLain, Zach Opatz, Hayden Swanson, Josh Hoover, Tiffany Hass, all Valley City.
