For the first time in a few years I got to go to Lake Winnie chasing walleyes. On Friday, I was headed to Highbanks Resort to guide for a veterans trip. The Cloquet area DAV group were staying at the resort and were hoping to catch some fish as they have had some poor fishing trips in the past.
We hit the water on Saturday morning with plenty of spinner rigs tied up. There was a little drizzle and a little wind, but we made our way to one of my favorite spots from fishing tournaments on the lake. And of course, as soon as we found a hungry school, the downpours came down and my anglers quickly decided they were not having any fun. So we headed in early and waited for the other guides to come in.
On day two, the weather cooperated but not the fish. As we made a few passes, we started to figure them out. Soon enough we were putting quite a few walleyes in the boat, and even some keepers. With some bonus pike, we spent the day getting bit off. Even that didn’t slow us down. With a great day on the water in the books, we headed to the fish cleaning house. There were plenty of fillets for everyone to take home for the freezer.
A huge thanks to the crew at Highbanks for the hospitality, Col. Scott St. Sauver for inviting me, and to the other guides for making it a great day on the water for some deserving veterans and their families.
