The privilege of hunting was recently bestowed upon a group of youth at the Wealthwood Gun Club, in Aitkin County. Another opportunity is available in September.
Every summer the club works with the Minnesota DNR and sponsors the final element required in the Hunter Certification Program, which allows hunting by youth and adults—the Firearms Safety Field Day. August 20 featured the third month for the field day this season. The last field day for this year will be at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 17. There were 29 registrants for the program.
Three groups walked the required elements including time on the live-fire range, target shooting, the proper way to enter and exit boats for duck hunting, identifying blood trails, the proper ways to cross fence lines and more.
Registrants are required to finish a DNR test online where 100 percent is the only acceptable score across 15 chapters of information. Inside work included identifying the types of guns, ammo and what is needed in a proper survival kit.
Wealthwood Gun Club has about 12 Instructors for firearm safety. The club is always looking for additional instructors. See www.wealthwoodgunclub.org where you can learn about this need.
Although the September date is considered full, you can call and register in case a spot opens. Emailing your registration is best. More information will be sent to each participant about two weeks before the class takes place.
