I guess there is no easy way to say it, but I think the world is getting a little crazy these days. Crazy things on the streets and flooding all around us and that’s not even what I’m talking about. Things a little closer to home are not right. First of all Mille Lacs Lake, either the state is trying to bankrupt the businesses around the lake or I believe someone really screwed up and will not step up and admit they are wrong. On several recent trips to the lake it is quite obvious that it is hands down the best fishing for miles. When you can catch walleyes from 5 to 35 feet of water any day all day but the DNR says that you can’t keep even one fish, something is up. All you hear from the media and people who haven’t fished it is that there aren’t any fish. Well we have been seeing walleyes from 12-27 inches and plenty of every year class. I’m not saying there should be a full limit allowed, but there are plenty of fish to at least have some sort of limit.
The businesses that depend on the tourism and anglers around Mille Lacs could really use a little boost. Don’t get me wrong, it is great fishing with no other boats in sight, but enough is enough and I would really like to hear exactly why we are catching all these imaginary fish.
On the other hand we have Gull Lake, which supposedly has tons of walleyes and they say isn’t in trouble. That is about as truthful as any political commercial on TV these days. Some people say there are fish but they are shallow, well those fish have always been there. If all the walleyes that are supposed to be in the lake went shallow they would be so thick you would snag them with every cast. When a group of guides go out with probably hundreds of years of experience and only come in with a couple of walleyes, well something isn’t right.
We’ve had meetings and tried to talk about smaller limits, slots and more stocking but the only answers we hear are that will not work or the lake is fine. I have even heard that Gull is a recreational lake and not considered a fishing lake. Well that’s my two cents, but what do I know. I just spend hours and hours fishing and looking for fish. I guess I should work for the state so I can come up with some new excuses.
