Winter trout fishing season opened Saturday, Jan. 16, and Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl urges anglers who venture into the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area mine pit lakes to use extreme caution.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers have been closely monitoring the mine pit lake ice conditions, and have been communicating with the sheriff’s office. Last week, there were still areas with open water, and many areas of ice not thick enough to support even anglers on foot.
Anglers residing in and visiting the Crow Wing County area should be extremely cautious when around all area lakes and waterways. With the unseasonably warm temperatures this season, lake ice continues to be unpredictable.
